Thickness

When choosing which steel panel is right for your project it's important to understand how panels are classified. Many compaines boast a thick gauge panel, however guage is not a measurment. In order to verify actual thickness you'll need to measure with a micrometer. A micrometer measures in thousandths of an inch and is the only way to know actual panel thickness. The difference between 26 and 29 gauge is less than the thickness of a sheet of paper. Testing shows this difference is not enough to change the strength properties in a panel.

Hardness
The hardness of a panel provides the most value to owners, hardness also determines the panel's overall Hail and Dent resistance. Different gauges offer different tensile strength. 26 gauge panel offers a 600,000 p.s.i. tensile strength while 28 gauge panel offers a 100,000 p.s.i. tensile strength.
